By the way, I think you meant to post your reply on the Linux guide, right?

Thank you for this very clear account of how to set up a Greek keyboard for use in OpenOffice or Word. I would like to be able to move to Linux, and what has kept me from doing so is the fact that I need to be able to type polytonic Greek for my work. With your excellent instructions I think I can now make the leap.

I found the Windows Language Bar to be a pain when you just need to insert a word or two of Greek into a document. Thessalonica supports both Word and OpenOffice. With OO, you can set up your own keyboard shortcuts so that you can switch modes on the fly. Works on any OO platform (Linux, Mac, etc...) and it's free.
